Most of my painting is done in the studio, using the research I have done with camera and sketch pad. The artist using a camera must, of course, learn to select and interpret the poses which best serve his purpose. I paint from a variety of images to produce work that has originality and life.

Mexico's Colonial Cities
View
this Collection
I have visited Mexico often in the last twenty years. In contrast to other places, the colonial cities (some protected by the government preserving the architecture), have changed very little. There are more cars, fewer animals and more plastic, but it still excites me to paint there. In particular I love to paint in San Miguel de Allende. The slow, measured pace of the old people stroling along cobblestone streets, wonderful color and texture on every winding street, and the magnificent cathedral dominating the town always draws me back.

Rural Scenes of Mexico
View
this Collection
While driving through the countryside, I am always looking for a scene to paint, and there are many to be found. It might be a field worker leaving for home, unmindful of the beauty that surrounds him, or a burro shaded by a tree, waiting for his owners return. There is beauty there waiting to be discovered.

Market Scenes
View
this Collection
The markets of Mexico are a great place to get to know the people. The vendors with their piles of fruit and vegetables and a stream of shoppers milling up and down the narrow aisles, stopping to inspect the produce and to bargain, combined with the colorful pattern of canvases fluttering overhead always attracts me. I want to share these views with my collectors.

Domestic Animals

I paint burros more than any other subject matter. Some refer to them as stubborn, but the word that best describes them to me, is "patient". They have a calmness and gentleness of those who fear nothing, and they make wonderful models because they stand still for hours. You will also find a collection of chickens, cows and whatever has caught my eye.

You can't be from Texas and not have some roots in the West. I enjoy adding horses and riders to the scenes I paint of the Hill Country. Usually these are friends who have agreed to be photographed on location. From a collection of photographs I select, rearrange and edit to make a painting.
